Resources associated with the academic retention of student-mothers during COVID-19 at a vocational training institution in Colombia
Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe and analyze the health assets referenced by student mothers at a job training centre in Colombia during the COVID-19 lockdown and their effect on academic retention. A qualitative approach was adopted, utilizing phenomenological design and incorporating focus groups, along with the LEGO Education methodology. The results highlight that collective, institutional, and individual assets were the primary sources of support that pregnant students or mothers of children under 6 years of age identified as necessary to continue their training during lockdown. The discussion suggests that if pregnant women or women with children up to 6 years of age received institutional support, such as curricular flexibility and more inclusive educational policies, from academic communities adopting a salutogenic approach during their education, student dropout rates among this population could be avoided.
