Focus and scope

The Higher Education and Society Journal (ESS) Revista Educación Superior y Sociedad (ESS) is a periodical published by the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO-IESALC), based in Caracas, Venezuela. It constitutes the main means of dissemination and approach to scientific research in the Universities and Institutions of Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean and in other regions. It is mainly oriented to the dissemination of research papers, theoretical studies on the field of higher education and its thematic trends.

In its history since 1990, ESS is a biannual publication (an annual volume with two issues, the first issue comprising the publication period: January-June and the second issue covering the months: July-December), refereed and indexed with open access, it disseminates internationally the most relevant advances in research and innovation in the field of higher education.

ESS is aimed at the academic community of the region and the world. To researchers in the social sciences, to undergraduate and postgraduate university students from the region and the world, to the general public interested in topics of reflection and analysis on higher education.

Work modality

ESS works as a thematic dossier. Each issue of the journal is composed of a selection of articles, received through public calls for papers on a specific topic, on a regular basis. The coordination of the production of these articles is carried out by one or more specialists of recognized prestige in the corresponding thematic area who will act as Editor or Guest Editors.

Each issue of the ESS also publishes articles received on a permanent basis addressed to the General Section and they are selected, as well as the manuscripts proposed to the thematic dossier, through compliance with a strict evaluation system that is in accordance with international standards.
