Women in Engineering and Computer Science. Study of the Stimulus Scholarship Program and its impact on enrolment
Abstract
Between 2012 and 2021, there was a high increase in the student population at national universities. When analying the distribution by careers, it is observed that a deep segmentation and differentiation by gender persists in Engineering and Computer Science careers. In 2019, as part of its institutional policy, the National University of Hurlingham (Argentina) designed the Career Stimulus Scholarship Program with the aim of strengthening the trajectories of female students in undergraduate and graduate studies: University Technology in Computer Science, Metallurgy and Electrical Energy, Metallurgical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. The article aims to contribute to the analysis of the impact of the Program in 2020 and 2021 in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to strengthen the enrolment of women in the aforementioned undergraduate and graduate studies. It is proposed to approach the topic from a qualitative methodology: the case study, with the objective of providing data in a given context using primary and secondary sources. The preliminary results of the study indicate that the strategies deployed by the Career Stimulus Scholarship Program tended to strengthen the enrolment of female students in undergraduate studies: Computer Science, Electrical Energy and Metallurgy, and graduate studies: Metallurgical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, in order to favor their academic trajectories.
