"Knowledge Diplomacy": Response to the challenges of the internationalization of HEI
Abstract
The objective of this article is to explore a new form of internationalization of the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) through the concept of "knowledge diplomacy". To this end, through theoretical and reflective work, we will establish a triadic relationship between diplomacy, the HEI and knowledge. Drawing on Jane Knight's definition of 'knowledge diplomacy’ and linking it to theoretical work on 'diplomacy as the mediation of estrangement', we will try to conceive of a more comprehensive, inclusive, and transversal internationalization. An internationalization that, on the one hand, allows us to mediate the multiple strangeness that is generated around the processes of internationalization and, on the other hand, responds to the challenges of the present and future of higher education. Thus, in this reflective article we will underline the importance of knowledge as a pillar of society and the relevance of HEIs as actors promoting the development of knowledge through cooperation and collaboration - in short, through diplomacy.
