Academic mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean: patterns and prospects

Resumo

While its scale has been relatively limi­ted, international student and scholar mobility to and from Latin America and the Caribbean has played a growing role in the internationalization of higher edu­cation institutions in recent years. This article describes the current landscape of international higher education mobi­lity in Latin America and the Caribbean, including the region’s global position in international mobility; the current scale and patterns of inbound and outbound students and scholars; analysis of the dri­vers of mobility; and discussion of future prospects.

Farrugia, Christine, Institute of International Education, IIE

Is Deputy Head of Research the Institute of International Education (IIE) where she leads Open Doors, a large-scale annual survey of international educational ex­change in the United States and oversees research in support of Generation Study Abroad. She has fifteen years of experien­ce as a university administrator and re­searcher of higher education and regular­ly authors research reports and articles on international higher education. In 2014 she was awarded the Harold Josephson Award for Professional Promise in Inter­national Education by the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA). She holds a Ph.D. from SUNY-Al­bany and M.A. and Ed.M. degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University..
