University, knowledge and regional development: contributions from research in Los Valles de Jalisco, Mexico
Abstract
This paper examines the contribution of the Centro Universitario de los Valles (CUValles) to knowledge generation in its region of influence. It highlights the crucial role of universities in regional development through teaching, research, and social engagement, and points out a gap in the literature on institutions in peripheral regions, such as CUValles. In its 25 years of existence, CUValles has made significant advances in academic production, particularly in social sciences and topics related to the municipality of Ameca, where it is located. Between 1911 and 2022, CUValles academics and students produced 364 documents, representing 25.63% of the total academic output identified in the region. The study, using the Repository of Studies of the Region of the CUValles (REV-CUValles), reveals a notable increase in research since the creation of CUValles. The document underscores the need to further explore CUValles’ contributions, considering both its quantitative and qualitative impact, and suggests future lines of research to deepen the understanding of regional dynamics and support the sustainable development of local communities.
